The following story (written by Jill Wagoner) will be published by the National Association for the Education Young Children's, November issue of Young Children (a bimonthly journal distributed to about 80,000 members).

Cooper Family

For nine months, like so many other first-time parents, we debated names, prepared the nursery, talked about all the things our son would do and activities we would do as a family.  We understood that couples can never entirely prepare themselves to be new parents,
but we thought we had a general idea of what our lives would look like. So when, in the first moments of Cooper's life, a nurse practitioner said he was presenting the physical characteristics of a baby with Down syndrome, at first it changed the entire picture we had for our son, for our family and for our future.

   Cooper

Having served with Smart Start Rowan for years, I was familiar with the reputation of Partners In Learning's (PIL) program for children with special needs and called from our hospital room the second day after his birth. We went to visit a week later and spent time with the director, program coordinator and inclusion specialist. We toured the school and by the time we left less than an hour later, we had a new second family. In the year since,Cooper has received not only care and love, but the attention of a team of people who have directly affected his development. We are fortunate that two of Cooper's therapists  are employed by PIL. His sessions are not just about the one hour he's allotted per week.  On top of their work with him, his therapists take the time to find new tools and activities.  Cooper's therapists also offer his teachers ideas about activities they can do throughout the week so that play and feeding time are both fun and productive.

The experience is not just tailored for a child with Down syndrome, but made specifically for Cooper. The staff at PIL understands that although Cooper is a child who has Down syndrome, he is also a child with the most infectious smile and personality who has taught us all that true faith does not disappoint, love never fails and to take nothing for granted. The team at PIL doesn't just look at his low muscle tone and delayed speech, but understands he is a child motivated by praise and who loves music and to snuggle and smile. Cooper is an amazing child who will do amazing things. His success thus far can be directly attributed to hard work on his part and our team and family at PIL. When asked about my recommendations for child care, I tell people that PIL is like Disney World. It's a magical place where anything is possible and dreams come true, where children have fun and learn something new every day. Our lives don't look exactly like we thought before we had Cooper, but they are just the way they were supposed to be, and PIL has been a big part of that.  Article taken from The Down Syndrome Association of Charlotte Newsletter.

"We would like to express our thanks for the wonderful job done by the staff of the playgroup at Partners In Learning. The Playgroup facilitator actively involves them in constructive and educational activities which have already produced positive results in our child. Our 3 year-old has learned how to interact in groups and is better behaved at home because of this great program. The quality of the facilities, supplies and staff are superlative! It has been refreshing to get parents involved with other parents and children in this way"-Dr. and Mrs. Andy Hornsby

"I like the fact that I get a weekly layout with day by day activities that she will be doing. Each person, whether it be the teacher or office staff, cares about and knows each child personally." Ginger Parker - Parent of a child with special needs

"In the 9 months that Sam has been attending Partners In Learning, we've pleasantly discovered how much more than just a day care that PIL is! Initially, Sam was diagnosed with traits of mild Autism and, initially, we thought this was to be a lifelong condition, however, with in-depth involvement and focused education by Sam's teachers at Partners In learning along with the latest behavioral techniques incorporated by the PIL staff, has undoubtedly resulted in miraculous improvement by Sam. Sam's learning curve as well as his social skills are now equal to that of his peers, thanks to Partners In Learning. Thanks PIL!" Scott and Deeann
